  1. [map projections] A compromise map projection that is not equal area, conformal, nor equidistant, but rather minimizes all three forms of geometric distortion. Constructed as a mathematical combination of two existing projections; proposed by German cartographer Oswald Winkel (1874 – 1953) in 1921.
