Cause

The following are known causes for this issue:

  • The member’s default role or custom role has insufficient privileges.
  • The member owns an existing group with the exact same name as the reassigned group. A member must not own two groups with the same name.
  • The ownership of a group with update capabilities is transferred to a non-administrator member.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, use one of the options below to resolve the issue.

Note:
Only an organization's administrator can perform the following workflows.

Update the member’s role to enable the privilege to own a group

Note:
A role defines the set of privileges assigned to a member. Privileges are assigned to members through a default role or a custom role.

Rename the new group or the existing group

Rename the new group before changing the group ownership to the member, or rename the existing group owned by the member.

  1. Launch ArcGIS Online. Click Groups > My Groups.
  2. Click the name of the desired group to open its group page, and click Edit Image of Edit icon to rename it. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Edit group properties and settings for more information.
  3. In the new group’s page, under Owner, click Change Owner, and search for the member’s name to change the group ownership. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Edit group properties and settings for more information.
Note:
Alternatively, delete the existing group, and change the ownership of the new group to the member.

Delete the group and create a new group without update capabilities for a non-administrator member

  1. Launch ArcGIS Online. Click Groups > My Groups.
  2. Browse to the desired group, click Delete Group > Delete.
Note:
If delete protection is enabled, refer to ArcGIS Online: Delete your group to delete the group.
  1. On the My Groups tab, click Create group. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Create a group for more information.
  2. In the Group Details of the Create New Group page, under What items in the group can its members update?, click Only their own items, and click Create Group.
  3. In the group page, on the Overview tab, change the group owner to the non-administrator member. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Edit group properties and settings for more information.
Note:
Alternatively, change the member’s default role to Administrator, and change the ownership of the group with update capabilities to the member. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Change member roles for more information.
