PROBLEM

Images are not exported in feature reports generated from the ArcGIS Survey123 website

Last Published: April 27, 2022

Description

A feature report containing survey information including maps, signatures and images can be generated after a survey is submitted. However, in some instances, the images captured are not exported to the Word document of the ArcGIS Survey123 feature report.

Specifically, some images are not exported in reports generated from Survey123 website when ${image_question_name} is used in the report template.

Cause

It is a known limitation that attachments do not appear in the reports created in Survey123 Website if they have been added to the survey's hosted feature layer outside Survey123 apps, such as ArcGIS Field Maps or a web app. For instance, adding attachments through the web map or a web application in ArcGIS Online, which can result in missing tags. See: ArcGIS Survey123 Known issues. This is also mentioned in existing bugs BUG-000126416, BUG-000111958, BUG-000139638.

This issue also happens in ArcGIS Enterprise versions prior to 10.8.1. ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8.1 supports attachment keywords. This attribute is necessary when generating ArcGIS Survey123 reports from the Survey123 web site in a Portal for ArcGIS environment, as Feature Service report templates use keywords to reference each image.

Data created before 10.8.1 gains the attribute keyword attribute, but the field does not auto-populate with the keyword. Therefore, image attachments are not printed on the reports.

Solution or Workaround

When looking at existing submissions on the individual form view in Survey123 website, these images show up under attachments section instead of showing up under each image question.

There are different ways to work around this issue.

The workaround is to batch export all images from the hosted feature layer of the survey to a file geodatabase, and edit the responses returned for the images that failed to export.

  1. Sign in to ArcGIS Online, and navigate to Content > My Content.
  2. Under Folders, browse to the survey folder, and select the survey's hosted feature layer as shown in the next image.

  1. On the item details page of the hosted feature layer, click Export Data > Export to FDGB to export the layer to a file geodatabase.
  2. In the Export to File Geodatabase window, fill in the required sections, and click Export, as shown in the next image

  1. On the item details page of the exported file geodatabase, click Download.
  2. Launch ArcGIS Pro, and connect to the file geodatabase. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Add a database directly to the project for steps to add the file geodatabase to a project.
  3. Batch export the images of the survey to a folder by configuring the 'survey_ATTACH' attachment table of the file geodatabase. Refer to How To: Batch export attachments from a feature class in ArcGIS Pro for steps to export the images to a folder.

  1. Check the Program name between images exported and images not exported to identify the problematic images for replacement.
  2. Sign in to the ArcGIS Survey123 Website. Navigate to the survey edit page, and click Data, as shown in the next image
  3. Click the survey response, and click Edit this record Image showing the Edit this record icon.

  1. Scroll to the survey's question where the response is an image, and click Delete Image of the Delete icon for the image not exported in the feature report.
  2. Click Select image file, browse to the location of the images recovered from the batch export in Step 7, and select the related image file.
  3. Click Submit on the lower-right of the page after uploading the related image.
  4. Repeat Steps 10 through 13 for every related survey response.
  5. Click Feature Report, and edit the required sections.
  6. To create a new survey feature report with all the captured images, click Generate to create the survey feature report, as shown in the next image.
