  1. [information systems] An abbreviation of project file. A file type associated with a coverage, Esri Grid, or TIN. Used with shapefiles, a PRJ file contains the coordinate system information for the data, typically in WKT format. The term PRJ sometimes refers to the coordinate system even if the information is not actually stored in a PRJ file. For example, "The PRJ of the shapefile is WGS 1984 UTM zone 15 north."
