Frequently asked question

What are the form and results hosted feature layer views used for in ArcGIS Survey123?

Last Published: October 24, 2022

Answer

When creating a survey through ArcGIS Survey123, a folder is created in Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Online named "Survey-SurveyName". Stored in this folder is a form item and a feature layer (if the feature layer was not created prior to publishing).

You may notice as you begin to work with permissions from the Survey123 website that some new hosted feature layer views appear in your survey folder. Error messages may also be encountered relating to these views, so it is important to note where and why they exist.

These hosted feature layer views are SurveyName_form and SurveyName_results. In earlier versions of Survey123 these views were named SurveyName_fieldworker and SurveyName_stakeholder, respectively. Both views are created automatically from the survey’s feature layer, and they are used to manage permissions for different aspects of the survey.

  • When you create and publish a survey in the Survey123 website (survey123.arcgis.com), both views are created in the survey’s folder.
  • When you create and publish a survey in Survey123 Connect, permissions for editing access are managed on the survey’s feature layer, and a form view is not created. For surveys published in Survey123 Connect, the results view is created when the Share survey settings are modified on the Collaborate tab of the Survey123 website.
Caution:
Do not delete the form and results views (or the fieldworker and stakeholder views for older surveys).

Form (fieldworker) view:
The form view is created only for surveys published from the Survey123 website. It is used to manage permissions for submitting and editing survey responses as a non-owner. The settings on the Collaborate > Share survey page of the Survey123 website determine if users can add, update, and delete survey records. These settings are applied to the form view.

Results (stakeholder) view:
The results view is created for surveys published from either the Survey123 website or Survey123 Connect. It is used to manage permissions for accessing the survey’s data as a non-owner. The settings on the Collaborate > Share results page of the Survey123 website determine the data users can see and actions they can perform. These settings are applied to the results view.
