Missing ESRIDefaultMarker font in Adobe Illustrator

Description

When exporting a map document to a .ai file, opening the file in Adobe Illustrator returns the following error:

The document uses fonts that are currently not available on your computer.

Cause

The following are known causes for the error:

  • The ESRIDefaultMarker font is not installed on the machine.
  • Adobe Illustrator does not detect the ESRIDefaultMarker font. This can occur if the font is installed with a different version number.

Solution or Workaround

Use the following solutions depending on the cause of the error:

The ESRIDefaultMarker font is not installed on the machine

Follow the steps below to install the font.

  1. With Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts.
  2. Right-click the font file or folder (usually named Esri_<version number>.tff).
  3. Click Install.
  4. After installation is complete, restart the machine.

Adobe Illustrator does not detect the ESRIDefaultMarker font

  1. Open the .ai file in Adobe Illustrator.
  2. Navigate to Type > Find Font.
  3. In the Replace with Font From section, select the missing ESRIDefaultMarker font from the Fonts in System list.
  4. Click Done.
