How To: Limit a user's access to Desktop Administrator functionality

In some situations administrators may want to limit a user's access to the options in Desktop Administrator. The following document outlines steps to do so by changing registry permissions for the restricted users.

The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

  1. Logged in as an Administrator, start the Registry Editor by navigating to Start> Run, type 'regedit' and click OK.
Users on Windows 2000 use 'regedt32' instead.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ESRI.
  3. Right-click on the folder and select 'Security'.
  4. Set the user's permissions for the \ESRI subfolder to DENY for Writing and ALLOW for the rest except for 'Full Control'.
This change may involve editing permissions for the user's group, or for the individual user account. Consult with your system administrator for assistance with permissions in the registry editor.
