Installation Notes
- You only need to install the ArcSDE Application Server service pack if you use an ArcSDE service for geodatabase connections and/or you installed the command line tools with the ArcSDE 10.1 Application Server installation.
- ArcSDE 10.1 must be installed before you can install Service Pack 1. Service Pack 1 is cumulative and contains the fixes from all previous 10.1 patches. If you have a previous 10.1 patch installed, you may apply Service Pack 1 over it to update the required files.
- Install this service pack using the account that owns the <ArcSDE Installation Directory>. Make sure that you have write access to the ArcSDE installation folder, the ArcSDE service is stopped, and no one is connected to the geodatabase.
- You only need to install the ArcSDE Commands service pack if you installed the stand-alone ArcSDE 10.1 Administration commands. If you installed the commands with the ArcSDE Application Server, apply that service pack instead.
- If you are unsure whether or not the standalone install for ArcSDE Commands or the ArcSDE Application Server install was used to get the Administration commands, run the newest version of the Patchfinder utility for your environment.
You must upgrade geodatabases in the following database management systems. Geodatabase upgrades are run from an ArcGIS client. Therefore, you must apply the service pack to your ArcGIS client then upgrade your geodatabase. See the topic specific to your DBMS and its related links for instructions to upgrade a geodatabase:
- Preparing to upgrade a geodatabase in DB2
- Preparing to upgrade a geodatabase in Oracle
- Preparing to upgrade a geodatabase in PostgreSQL (If you use the PostGIS geometry type in PostgreSQL, also see Esri technical article 40553 for information on supported versions.)

- Stop your current ArcSDE service, if one is running.
% sdemon -o shutdown
NOTE (IBM AIX only): You must remove any inactive libraries that are loaded into memory before proceeding to the next step. Not doing so will result in an installation error. To remove them, as ROOT user, type:
# /usr/sbin/slibclean
(Optional) To list the libraries loaded into memory, as ROOT user, type:
# /usr/sbin/genkld
For further information on the slibclean and genkld commands please refer to your AIX system administrator documentation.
