Frequently asked question

How are aggregated values calculated for polygon and line features with the Spatial Aggregation tool in Insights for ArcGIS?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

Spatial aggregation calculations in Insights for ArcGIS 3.2.1 and earlier use the full value of line and polygon features, rather than proportional values based on the amount of overlap with the summary areas. The full values affect the overall result if you are aggregating for a sum or average value. Therefore, it is best practice to use the following guidelines when aggregating polygons and lines:

  • Only summarize counts and amounts, such as population, using lines and areas that are completely contained within the boundaries.
  • If lines or areas overlap multiple boundaries, use a rate or ratio as the summary field, such as population density.
