Frequently asked question

Can ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App generate population data for overlapping drive-time areas?

Last Published: September 27, 2024

Answer

No, it is not possible to generate population data within overlapped drive-time areas in ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App.

Multiple drive-time areas around the site can be created at specific times or based on road networks. In Business Analyst Web App, business, demographic, and point of interest (POI) data can only be generated for non-overlapping drive-time intervals. Refer to How to: Create a generation report in ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App for more information. However, it is possible to generate population data within overlapped drive-time areas in ArcGIS Pro. The exported drive-time areas from Business Analyst Web App must be separated individually based on the same drive-time interval before generating population data using the Enrich tool.

  1. In ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App, export the site layers as a web map to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Business Analyst: Share web maps and layers for instructions.
  2. Open the project in ArcGIS Pro and log in to an ArcGIS Online organizational account. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Sign in to your organization for instructions.
  3. Add the web map in Step 1 to the map. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Add a web map or web scene for instructions.
  4. Select and export the polygon features with the same drive-time interval to a new feature layer. Refer to How to: Export selected features from a feature layer in ArcGIS Pro for instructions.
  5. Create a new feature layer for the overlapped drive-time polygons in Step 4 using the Intersect tool.
    1. On the Analysis tab, in the Geoprocessing group, click Tools.
    2. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and click Intersect (Analysis Tools).
    3. In the Intersect pane, for Input Features, select the exported polygon feature layer in Step 4 from the drop-down list.
    4. For Output Feature Class, specify a name and location for the output feature layer.
    5. Click Run.
  6. Calculate a population within the overlapped drive-time polygons using the Enrich tool.
Note:
Running the Enrich tool consumes credits. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Geoprocessing tools that use credits for more information.
    1. On the Analysis tab, in the Geoprocessing group, click Tools.
    2. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and click Enrich (Analysis Tools).
    3. In the Enrich pane, for Input Features, select the overlapped feature layer from the drop-down list.
    4. For Output feature class, specify a name and location for the output feature layer.
    5. For Variables, click the add button The add button. Double-click Population > Population Totals and select preferred population data in the Data Browser window. Click OK.
    6. Click Run.
Note:
Click estimate credits to determine how many credits are used to run the Enrich tool.
The Enrich pane
Note:
Publish the output feature layer to ArcGIS Online as a hosted feature layer for use in Business Analyst Web App, if necessary. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web feature layer using the default configuration for more information.
Note:
Alternatively, publish the overlapped drive-time feature layer to ArcGIS Online and enrich the published feature layer in Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic using the Enrich Layer tool. Refer to How to: Perform data enrichment on a layer in ArcGIS Online for more information.
