DEPRECATION

Oriented Imagery Classic

Last Published: January 21, 2025

Description

Oriented Imagery Classic—an add-in, community-supported solution for managing and visualizing street-level images, 360 images, full-resolution drone images, video, and more—is being deprecated.

We are integrating the oriented imagery capability directly into the ArcGIS system; this integration will eventually replace Oriented Imagery Classic.

After the February 2024 release of ArcGIS Online, no new features have been added to Oriented Imagery Classic.

Oriented Imagery Classic will be maintained until the oriented imagery capability within ArcGIS has reached equivalency and users have had sufficient time to migrate their data and workflows to the new data model and tools, at which point Oriented Imagery Classic will be retired.

This deprecation includes the following components:

  • Oriented Imagery Classic add-in for ArcGIS Pro
  • Oriented Imagery Classic Management Tools
  • Oriented Imagery widget for ArcGIS Experience Builder
  • Oriented Imagery Explorer web app
  • Oriented Imagery Classic API
  • The oriented imagery catalog data model
  • ArcGIS QuickCapture—ability to publish oriented imagery catalogs
  • Site Scan for ArcGIS—ability to publish oriented imagery catalogs

Bringing the oriented imagery capability into ArcGIS offers the following benefits to users:

  • Long-term commitment to maintenance, enhancements, and innovation
  • Wider adoption of oriented imagery by apps across the ArcGIS platform (no add-ins or downloads required)
  • Leverages widely used ArcGIS patterns for working with operational layers
  • Supported by Esri Technical Support

The October/November 2023 releases of ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro 3.2, and ArcGIS Enterprise 11.2 introduced the oriented imagery capability in ArcGIS; additional features will be added across ArcGIS until the capability approaches parity with Classic, likely toward the end of 2025.

Recommendation

Oriented Imagery Classic users must plan to migrate to ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro 3.2 and later, or ArcGIS Enterprise 11.2 and later, once the Oriented Imagery Classic features they rely on are available in the integrated capability (ideal) or before Classic is retired in 2026 (at the latest).

To migrate, Classic users must do the following:

  1. Convert your oriented imagery catalogs into oriented imagery layers using the Oriented Imagery geoprocessing toolbox in ArcGIS Pro, the Esri-provided web app (when available), or your own custom workflow.
  2. Revise any automated publishing scripts or customized image management strategies to work with the integrated tools and data model.
  3. Recreate any oriented imagery web apps using oriented imagery layers and the oriented imagery viewer. The oriented imagery viewer is currently available as part of ArcGIS Instant Apps (Sidebar or 3D Viewer templates) and is planned for ArcGIS Experience Builder in early 2025. The oriented imagery viewer can also be added to a custom app built with ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript.
  4. Train staff about any resulting changes to internal workflows (for example, new apps, tools, or procedures, and so forth).

The scale of these tasks depends on the scale of the Oriented Imagery Classic deployment and the level of customization or automation.

If out-of-the-box Oriented Imagery Classic tools are used, migrating will likely be straightforward. For example, consider if you had created oriented imagery catalogs using Oriented Imagery Classic geoprocessing tools, published them to ArcGIS Online with the images as attachments, then built and shared an app using ArcGIS Experience Builder. To migrate, you would either need to use the built-in oriented imagery management geoprocessing tools to manage your imagery (using a workflow that is very similar to that of Classic), or use our provided web app (once it is available) to convert your published oriented imagery catalog (OIC) to an oriented imagery layer item in ArcGIS Online. You would then recreate your ArcGIS Experience Builder app using the new oriented imagery viewer widget in ArcGIS Experience Builder (once it is available) or ArcGIS Instant Apps.

If you have performed a lot of customization and automation, are relying on third-party authentication to access your images, or you are managing and sharing a large volume of images, the migration will likely be a more involved process. If you worked with Professional Services to implement Oriented Imagery Classic, they can help you migrate to the integrated oriented imagery capability.
