Summary
When a measured grid or graticule is added to a layout, the measured grid or graticule covers the extent of the data frame for which it was created. The following is a workaround for this limitation. Using this method, a measured grid/graticule can be created for a portion of the data frame. When a measured grid is used, it will always be a rectangle that fits the full extent of the data frame.
Note:
In ArcMap 8.x, 9.0 and 9.1, grids (graticules) cover the full extent of the Data Frame, even if data in the Data Frame is clipped. At versions 9.2 and 9.3, grids are clipped to the extent of the data displayed in the ArcMap Data Frame, if clipping is applied to the data.
Procedure
Instructions provided describe how to create a grid or graticule for a portion of a data frame. This procedure calls for steps that may introduce slight inaccuracies in the location and size of the measured grid/graticule.
- Add data to the data frame (dataframe_1).
- Create a new data frame (dataframe_2).
- Copy and paste the data from dataframe_1 to dataframe_2.
- Zoom into the area of interest in dataframe_2.
- Switch to layout view.
- Move dataframe_2 so that both data frames are visible in the layout.
- Right-click on dataframe_1 in the Table of Contents and select Properties.
- Select the Extent Rectangles tab.
- Select dataframe_2 in the left window and click the single arrow to add dataframe_2 to the right window. Click Ok.
- Resize dataframe_2 to the size of the extent rectangle in dataframe_1.
Note:
This step may introduce inaccuracy to the grid.
- Make dataframe_1 active.
- Copy the scale information from the Standard toolbar.
- Make dataframe_2 active, and paste the value into the scale of this data frame. Press Enter.
- Using the extent rectangle, place dataframe_2 over dataframe_1 so that it appears seamless (except for the frames).
Note:
This step may introduce inaccuracy to the grid.
- Create the measured grid/graticule for dataframe_2.
- Right-click on dataframe_2 in the Table of Contents and select Properties.
- Select the Frame tab and set the border to none. Click OK.
- Right-click on dataframe_1 in the Table of Contents and select Properties.
- Select the Extents rectangle and click the frame button.
- Set the border to none. Click Ok.
