  1. [graphics (map display)] A technique that combines datasets with varying degrees of opaqueness to reveal, emphasize, and convey information in the data.
  2. [visualization] In GIS, transparency and its opposite, opacity, are measures of how see-through a feature or layer appears. For example, increasing a layer's transparency allows you to see more of the layers underneath.
