  1. [physics] The amount of solar radiation received in the earth's atmosphere or at its surface. Solar insolation depends primarily on the solar zenith angle, the variable distance of the earth from the sun, and scattering and absorption characteristics of the atmosphere. It is measured as the flux of solar radiation per unit of horizontal area for a given location.
