[mathematics] A ratio commonly used in population statistics; rate is obtained by dividing a numerator that equals the number of occurrences of an event during a specified time by a denominator that equals the number of possible occurrences in the same period. For birth and death rates, it is expressed as the number of events per population in the time period, such as the number of births or deaths.
