A mathematical conversion of a map from one coordinate system to a projected coordinate system. For example, from a geographic coordinate system (latitude and longitude) to a projected coordinate system (such as UTM), or from one projected coordinate system to another. Generally used to integrate maps with differing coordinate systems into a GIS.
