  1. [data structures] A method of organizing data values into categories that have an equivalent, or non-hierarchical, value. In GIS, nominal data is used to distinguish different types of features within a map theme. For example, a group of polygons colored to represent different soil types. Also known as categorical data or nominal-level data.
