A mapmaking method that uses a single symbol to represent two or more data variables. Multivariate symbol mapping is typically used to simplify complex data, using the aspects of a symbol—such as its shape, color, and size—to differentiate variables. For example, a multivariate map can use proportional symbol sizes to indicate relative regional population counts and a color range to indicate regional economic incomes.
