independent variable

  1. [statistics] One or a set of variables used to model or predict the dependent variable. For example, a prediction of annual purchases for a proposed store (the dependent variable) might include independent variables representing the number of potential customers, distance to competition, store visibility, and local spending patterns. In the regression equation, independent variables appear on the right side of the equal sign and are often referred to as explanatory variables.
