  1. [network analysis] A measure of the amount of resistance met when transiting a network or network segment. Impedance may be a measure of travel time, travel distance, speed of travel multiplied by distance, or expenditure (toll roads, fuel price, and so on). An optimum path in a network is the one with the lowest impedance, also called the least-cost path. Impedance is often used interchangeably with cost.
