Also known by the acronym GMT. The time at the prime meridian, which runs through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. From 1884 to 1928, Greenwich mean time was the official name (and is still the popular name) for universal time. It sometimes also refers to coordinated universal time (UTC).
