  1. [visualization techniques] A visualization technique that uses the values from one grid (such as a hillshade) to determine the light (or brightness) value of another grid (such as an elevation). Most commonly, brightness themes are used to improve the realistic quality of 3D relief maps where shadows and highlights reveal the terrain shape, topography, and the elevation surface in relief.
