  1. [map design] In cartography, text or graphics on a map that provide information for the map reader. An annotation may identify or describe a specific map entity, provide general information about an area on the map, or supply information about the map itself. Media/annotation.gif
  2. [Esri software] A part of a web map (text or graphics) that can be individually selected, positioned, and modified. An annotation may be manually entered or generated from labels. Annotations can be stored as features in a geodatabase or as map annotation.
