Inconsistent label sizes in the map and layout views in ArcGIS Pro

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, feature layer labels appear at different sizes in the map and layout views. The labels appear smaller in the layout view, especially in a portrait map frame, compared to the labels in the map view.

The maps below show the difference in label size between the map and layout views.

Cause

• The reference scale is not set. Therefore, label sizes remain static and unaffected by the map extent or layout scale.
• The label font size does not align with the layout scale or map frame size.

Solution or Workaround

Set a map reference scale similar to the layout view scale

Set a map reference scale in the map view to ensure the labels appear at a consistent size in both the map and layout views. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Map reference scales for instructions.

The layout view below shows the labels are appropriately sized within the map frame.

Adjust the label font size in the layout view

1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the layout view.
2. In the Contents pane, right-click the desired feature layer and click Labeling Properties... to open the Label Class pane.
3. In the Label Class pane, on the Symbol tab, expand Appearance. For Size, specify the preferred font size to display the labels at the desired size in the layout view.
4. Click Apply. Optionally, toggle Auto Apply on to apply changes automatically.

Note:
The font size can also be adjusted through the ArcGIS Pro ribbon. On the ribbon, click the Labeling tab. In the Text Symbol group, specify the preferred font size or click Increase Font Size to incrementally adjust the font size.
