Increase the character length of a text field in ArcGIS Online

Summary

In ArcGIS Online, increasing the character length of a text field is useful when longer text are required, such as hyperlinks and concatenating text. However, it is not possible to increase the character length of an existing field. This article provides the workflow to increase the character length of the field by creating a new field with increased length and populating it with properties of the original field.

Procedure

1. In ArcGIS Online, on the Content tab, click the hosted feature layer to open its item details page. On the item details page, click the Data tab.
2. In the Table view, click Options , and click Add Field to create a new field.
3. In the Add Field dialog box, configure the following parameters:
   1. For Field Name, specify the name of the new field. In this example, the name of the new field is New_Info.
   2. For Type, ensure String is selected from the drop-down list.
   3. For Length, specify a value for the character length. In this example, it is 350.
   4. Leave the other parameters as default.
   5. Click Add New Field.

4. Click the field header and select Calculate. In this example, the New_Info field is selected.
5. In the Calculate Field dialog box, click SQL.
6. In the Calculate Field dialog box, from the Fields list, click the original field to add the field name to the expression box. In this example, Info is selected.
7. Click Validate to verify the expression.
8. In the Calculate Field dialog box, click Calculate.

The image below shows the newly created field, New_Info, contains more text characters than the original field, Info.
