Frequently asked question

Can an image be used as a feature class label in an ArcGIS Pro layout?

Last Published: June 26, 2024

Answer

No, it is not possible to use an image as a feature class label in an ArcGIS Pro layout.

Labeling is designed to improve readability and add information about features derived from any field in the feature attribute. It is important for layout printing as it offers the reader a clear understanding of the map features in the printed output. However, ArcGIS Pro only allows the use of descriptive text or numerical values as feature class labels, which are automatically displayed and positioned in maps and scenes. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Labeling basics for more information. In ArcGIS Pro, it is only possible to manually add and place an image to be viewed as a label using one of the following workarounds.

Create a picture marker symbol layer

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, copy features from the feature layer to a new feature class using the Copy Features tool. Refer to the Procedure section of How To: Export selected features from a feature layer in ArcGIS Pro for instructions.
  2. Add a marker symbol layer to the newly copied feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Add a symbol layer for instructions.
  3. Specify the marker type of the newly added marker symbol layer to a picture marker. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Marker symbol layers for more information.
  4. Add the image and specify the Appearance, Position, Rotation, and Offset Distance properties to place and position the picture marker symbol layer as a feature class label. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Picture marker symbol layers for more information.

Add an image to the ArcGIS Pro layout using the Picture element

In ArcGIS Pro, add the image to the layout using the Picture element and manually place it as a feature class label. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Add graphics, text, and pictures in a layout for more information.
