[physics]
An apparent change in wave frequency caused by distance between the source and an observer. As they approach one another, the frequency increases; as they draw apart, the frequency decreases. The Doppler shift is also known as the Doppler effect and is named for Austrian physicist and mathematician Christian Andreas Doppler (1803–1853).
