  1. [government] Also known by the acronym CBSA. A geographic region containing at least one urban area with a population of at least 10,000, defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget for use by federal statistical agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau. A core-based statistical area can be a metropolitan statistical area or a micropolitan statistical area.
