Unable to publish the survey: HTTP 504 Unknown Error

Error Message

After creating the survey, and attempting to publish it from Portal for ArcGIS using the ArcGIS Survey123 website, the following error is returned:

Unable to publish the survey: HTTP 504 Unknown Error

When checking from the browser's Developer tools, on the Response tab, the following error may be displayed.

"504 Gateway Timeout","Error from Cloudfront"

Cause

This is not a Survey123 error. The error is on the Cloudfront side and users must investigate the issue with the help of their IT department. 

Solution or Workaround

There are two approaches to resolve this issue:

• Work with your IT network team to resolve any web application firewall issues.
• Use ArcGIS Survey123 Connect as an alternative to publish the survey.
