PROBLEM

Unable to import a zoning feature layer when creating an urban model in ArcGIS Urban

Last Published: September 10, 2024

Description

In ArcGIS Urban, zoning boundaries are used to manage and visualize 3D zoning regulations and land use plans. In some cases, when the zoning feature layer is imported to create an urban model, the validation fails due to features being invalid.

The image below shows the validation results in the 'Import zoning' dialog box.

Cause

The zoning boundary label classes do not match the zoning type values. The match is case-sensitive, and any missing or incorrectly populated values cause the validation process to fail.

The image below shows the non-matching zoning boundary label classes and the zoning type values in the ArcGIS Pro Symbology pane.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Log in to ArcGIS Online and export the zoning feature class from the hosted feature layer to a file geodatabase. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Export data from hosted feature layers for instructions.
  2. On the item details page of the exported file geodatabase, click Download to download the .zip file to the local folder and extract the file.
  3. In ArcGIS Pro, add the zoning feature class from the exported file geodatabase to the map. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Browse to data to add to a map or scene for instructions.
  4. Symbolize the zoning feature layer using the unique value symbology. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Unique values for instructions. For Field 1 parameter, select the zone type field from the drop-down list. In this example, ZoneTypeId is selected.

Note:
When the zoning feature layer is symbolized, the zoning boundary label classes in the Symbology pane are auto-populated with the zoning type values.
  1. Publish the zoning feature layer as a web layer in ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web feature layer using the default configuration for instructions.
Note:
Alternatively, add the zipped file geodatabase and publish its contents as a hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Publish the contents of a file geodatabase for more information.
  1. In ArcGIS Urban, create an urban model by uploading the hosted zoning feature layer with defined symbology for each zoning type.

The image below shows the zoning features from the hosted feature layer are valid when used to create an urban model in ArcGIS Urban.
