Subscripts or superscripts in labels not displayed in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer

Last Published: April 21, 2025

Description

After publishing a feature layer from ArcGIS Pro to ArcGIS Online, subscripts or superscripts display correctly in the attribute table and pop-ups but are not visible in labels within Map Viewer in ArcGIS Online. The image below shows the subscript not displayed in the label on the map.

Subscripts do not display as expected in labels within the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer

Cause

This is by design. Some fonts in ArcGIS Online support only a limited set of Unicode characters and do not support subscript or superscript formatting.

Solution or Workaround

To ensure subscripts or superscripts are displayed correctly, switch the label style font in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer to one of the fonts listed below. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Customize the label style for instructions and more information on label styling.

  • Alegreya
  • Alegreya SC
  • Arial Unicode MS
  • Life Savers
  • Montserrat
  • Old Standard TT
  • Palatino Linotype
  • Ubuntu
  • Ubuntu Mono
Note:
The only font compatible with both platforms that provides adequate Unicode support is Palatino Linotype (Regular). Use this font to ensure consistent label rendering between ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
