PROBLEM

Last Published: March 14, 2023

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, when exporting a layout with a north arrow to a PDF file, the north arrow symbol is displayed incorrectly as shown in the image below.

Cause

The north arrow symbols provided in ArcGIS Pro is a character from a font. When a map layout is exported to PDF, the PDF viewer used to open the exported PDF file does not contain the font that the symbol uses. Instead, it references the font to one available in their databases, causing the north arrow symbol to display incorrectly.

Solution or Workaround

Embed the fonts before exporting the layout to a PDF file to resolve the issue.

  1. Open the ArcGIS project.
  2. Click the Layout tab to activate the layout view. The tab color turns blue.
  3. In the layout view, on the Share tab, click Export Layout.
  4. In the Export Layout pane, on the Properties tab, expand Fonts and check the Embed fonts check box.
