Newly created features are not visible in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic

Description

In ArcGIS Online, when attempting to create new features using the available feature template in the Editor pane of Map Viewer or in the Add Features pane of Map Viewer Classic, the newly created feature disappears upon creation. The image below shows the newly added feature disappears upon creation in Map Viewer.

New features are not displayed on the web map upon creation in Map Viewer.

Cause

  • The hosted feature layer has filters applied to it.
  • The hosted feature layer is published with a definition query from ArcGIS Pro.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, use one of the following options to remove filters or definition queries from the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online.

Remove the filter from the hosted feature layer in Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic

In Map Viewer, remove the filter applied to the hosted feature layer to display all features.

  1. In ArcGIS Online, click Content > My Content.
  2. Browse to the hosted feature layer or web map, click More Options Click the More Options button to display the drop-down list., and select Open in Map Viewer.
  3. In Map Viewer, on the Settings (light) toolbar, click Filter.
  4. In the Filter pane, click Remove Click Remove to remove filter from the hosted feature layer. next to Remove filter, and click Save.

In Map Viewer Classic, remove the filter applied to the hosted feature layer to display all features.

  1. In ArcGIS Online, click Content > My Content.
  2. Browse to the hosted feature layer or web map, click More Options Click the More Options button to display the drop-down list., and select Open in Map Viewer Classic.
  3. In Map Viewer, in the Contents pane, browse to the feature layer, and click Filter When a filter is applied, related features or images are hidden..
  4. In the Filter: <layer name> window, on the View tab, click REMOVE FILTER.

Delete the definition query from the hosted feature layer’s REST endpoint

Note:
Only an organization administrator or item owner can perform the following workflow.
  1. In ArcGIS Online, click Content > My Content.
  2. Browse to the hosted feature layer, click More Options Click the More Options button to display the drop-down list., and select View item details.
  3. On the item details page, on the Overview tab, in the URL section, click View to open the ArcGIS REST Services Directory.
  4. In the ArcGIS REST Services Directory, click Admin in the header to access the admin endpoint.
  5. In the admin endpoint, under Layers, click the hosted feature layer.
  6. On the Layer: <layer name> (ID:<layer ID>) page, under Supported Operations, click Delete From Definition.
  7. On the Delete From Layer Definition - <layer name> page, in the Delete From Layer Definition text box, delete all text other than the definition query. The image below shows the Delete From Layer Definition text box containing the definition query to be deleted from the hosted feature layer.
The deleteFromDefinition operation supports deleting a definition property from a hosted feature service.
  1. Click Delete From Layer Definition. The Delete From Definition operation is completed when the message, “Updated Feature Service Layer: <layer name>” is returned.

Remove or delete the definition query and republish the layer in ArcGIS Pro

In ArcGIS Pro, remove or delete the definition query from the feature layer and republish it to ArcGIS Online.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Pro project.
  2. In the Contents pane, browse to and click the feature layer.
  3. On the top ribbon, on the Data tab, use one of the following options to remove or delete the active definition query from the feature layer.
    • Select <None> in the Definition Query group to remove the active definition query.
    • Click Remove definition query in the Layer Properties window to delete the definition query. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Modify existing queries for more information.
  4. Click the Share tab and republish the feature layer to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Overwrite a web feature layer for more information.
