PROBLEM

Label placement properties in ArcGIS Pro are not retained in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer

Last Published: October 11, 2021

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, label placement properties for a feature layer are not retained when the layer is published to ArcGIS Online as a hosted feature layer. The images below show label placement in ArcGIS Pro and the web map in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer and Map Viewer Classic.

In ArcGIS Pro:

The labels for the Roads layer in ArcGIS Pro display an offset between the label and the line features, and the label follow the curves of the line.

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer:

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer, the labels for the Roads layer are overlapping with the line features, which shows no offset between those two.

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic:

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic, the labels for the Roads layer are overlapping with the line features, which shows no offset between those two and the labels do not follow the lines curve.

Cause

This is a limitation in ArcGIS Online. Labels for hosted feature layers are displayed differently because label placement properties in ArcGIS Pro are not compatible with ArcGIS Online.

Solution or Workaround

The following workarounds are possible solutions to this problem.

Configure the labels settings for the hosted feature layer in the ArcGIS Online web map

Configure the labels settings in Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic to control how the label properties display in the web map. In Map Viewer or Map Viewer Classic, browse to the hosted feature layer in the web map and configure the labels settings. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Configure labels (Map Viewer) or ArcGIS Online: Create labels (Map Viewer Classic) for instructions.

Convert the labels to annotation using the Convert Labels To Annotation tool in ArcGIS Pro

In ArcGIS Pro, convert the feature layer labels to annotation using the Convert Labels To Annotation tool and publish as a tile layer to ArcGIS Online.

  1. Launch ArcGIS Pro, and open the project containing the feature layer with labels.
  2. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for the Convert Labels To Annotation tool. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Run a tool in the Geoprocessing pane for steps to do this.

When searching the tool in the Geoprocessing pane, the tool appear as the first search result named as Convert Labels To Annotation (Cartography Tools).

  1. Convert the feature layer labels to annotation using the Convert Labels To Annotation tool. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Prepare labels for conversion to annotation for more information.
  2. Publish the layer as hosted tile layer to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web tile layer using the default configuration for more information.

The images below show the label placement retained in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer and Map Viewer Classic.

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer:

The labels for the Roads layer in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer display an offset between the label and the line features, and the label follow the curves of the line same as in ArcGIS Pro.

In ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic:

The labels for the Roads layer in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic display an offset between the label and the line features, and the label follow the curves of the line same as in ArcGIS Pro.
