HOW TO

Display different basemaps based on zoom levels in the ArcGIS Enterprise portal and ArcGIS Online

Last Published: February 26, 2025

Summary

In geospatial analysis, a basemap enhances visual appeal and serves as the foundational layer for geographic context. In Map Viewer, the default basemap is automatically added to a new web map unless a custom default basemap is configured for the organization. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: Configure map or ArcGIS Online: Configure map for more information. For contextual, time-based, or multi-scale comparisons, displaying different basemaps at different zoom levels enhances the analysis by providing clearer geographic insights.

This article provides the workflow for displaying different basemaps based on zoom levels in the ArcGIS Enterprise portal and ArcGIS Online.

Procedure

  1. Open the web map in Map Viewer.
  2. Add a new basemap to the web map.
    1. On the Contents (dark) toolbar, click Basemap The Basemap icon in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer.
    2. In the Basemap pane, click Current basemap.
    3. Under the Base section, click Add.
    4. In the Add layer pane, browse to and click the preferred layer. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Browse layers or ArcGIS Enterprise: Browse layers for instructions.
    5. In the selected layer pane, click Add layer to basemap.
Note:
Create a multilayer basemap to use the existing operational layers as additional basemap layers. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: Create a multilayer basemap or ArcGIS Online: Create a multilayer basemap for instructions, and ArcGIS Enterprise: Basemap considerations or ArcGIS Online: Basemap considerations for more information.
  1. Configure the added basemap visibility range. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: Set transparency and visible range (Map Viewer) or ArcGIS Online: Set transparency and visible range (Map Viewer) for more information.
    1. In the Add layer pane, click Back The Back icon in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer.
    2. In the Basemap pane, under the Base section, click the added basemap layer in Step 2.
    3. In the Properties pane, under the Visibility section, drag the Visible range slider as preferred.
