HOW TO

Create a layout template from a layout for different map references in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: August 19, 2022

Summary

In ArcGIS Pro, it is possible to create a consistent set of layouts using an existing layout as a template. However, when edits are made in the map frame, the edits are also reflected in the referenced map. This subsequently changes the map frames referencing the same map in other layouts. This article provides three methods to create a standalone layout template from a layout to use with different map references in ArcGIS Pro.

Procedure

In ArcGIS Pro, use one of the workflows described below to do so.

Export the layout as a layout file

Export the layout as a layout file with empty map frames to create a layout template that allows map frames to reference different maps. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Save a layout file with empty map frames for instructions.

Save the layout as a project template

Save the layout as a project template to create a customizable starting layout template for subsequent layouts. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create a project template for personal use for instructions.

Save the layout as a project package

Save the layout as a project package when creating a layout template to enable edits and changes to the layout’s map frame without affecting the other layouts. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create a project package for more information.
