Answer
The ESRI Secure License File (ESLF) provides a secure method of authenticating and activating ArcGIS products, allowing organizations to manage offline and batch license provisioning efficiently. ESLF authentication can be configured using three different methods, depending on the deployment requirements:
- Machine Authentication ties the license file to a specific machine using its MAC address or UMN ID. This method ensures that the license can only be used on the machine on which it was originally authorized. It is ideal for standalone or field-deployed systems where secure, fixed access is essential.
- Network Authentication validates the license file over a local network, allowing for centralized license management. This method is suitable for environments where devices are connected to the same network and require shared access to the license. However, if the internal environment and the field-deployable machine are not on the same network, Network Authentication does not function when the device is used in the field.
- Password Authentication enables the use of the license file on a machine through the entry of a predefined password. This approach provides added flexibility in secure environments where hardware or network-based authentication is not feasible. The license file is not tied to a specific hardware ID or network, allowing it to be reused or moved to another machine, provided the total number of allowed activations has not been exceeded. This method is especially useful for limited deployments or temporary authorizations.
Each method offers a distinct approach to controlling license access while maintaining appropriate levels of security.
Note:
License validation issues may occur if the selected ESLF authentication method is not compatible with the deployment environment.
The following workflow outlines the steps required to perform the ESLF authentication methods.
- Log in to My Esri and click the Licensing tab.
- Under License Esri Products, navigate to Select Product and License Options.
- Select an ArcGIS Product and configure License Type and Licenses as necessary.
- For File Type, select ESLF (Esri Secure License File) from the drop-down menu and click Next.
- On the Select Products page, enter the license quantity to be allocated for each product and click Next.
- Depending on the desired authentication method, configure the selected authentication method on the ESLF Authentication page:
- For Machine Authentication, enter the MAC address or UMN ID.
- For Network Authentication, specify the number of projected deployments and enter the machine’s network domain.
- For Password Authentication, specify the number of projected deployments and provide a user-defined or system-supplied password.
- Click Next.
- Review all settings and download the license file.
