Frequently asked question

Can a splash screen be added to only one device mode in ArcGIS Experience Builder?

Last Published: May 23, 2024

Answer

No, a splash screen cannot be added to one device mode only in ArcGIS Experience Builder. The 'Set as splash' option is only available when a window is set to the Fixed mode, and a window in the Fixed mode cannot be moved to the pending list. The pending list is designed to hide configured widgets temporarily; only windows anchored to widgets can be hidden when moving the widgets to the list.

The capability to add configured widgets to the pending list makes it possible for an experience to display different user interfaces for different device modes (desktop, tablet, and mobile). To enhance the user experience while using a web experience, additional instructions displayed via a window may be necessary for the varied user interfaces. To achieve this, use a Button, Card, or Image widget to anchor a window. The only drawback is that the window cannot be displayed as a splash screen, and the widget added must be clicked to display the window.

Follow the steps below to add an anchored window to one device mode only. In this workflow, the window is to be displayed in mobile device mode.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Experience Builder experience.
  2. Click the Page The Page button button to open the Page panel.
  3. In the same panel, click the Window tab.
  4. On the Window tab, click the Add window The Add window button button, and select a suitable window template. Refer to ArcGIS Experience Builder: Templates for more information.
Note:
By default, all templates are set to the Fixed mode when selected, except for the Tooltip and Steps templates, which are set to the Anchored mode. If a template that is set to the Fixed mode is selected, be sure to change the default mode to Anchored; otherwise, the window selection will not be available for Step 12.
  1. On the builder toolbar, click the Edit your page for small screen devices The Edit your page for small screen devices button button to view the experience in mobile mode.
  2. Click the Custom button next to the layout of the page to enable the customization for mobile mode.
Note:
By changing to the Custom mode, the added widget following this step is available in the mobile view only. For the desktop and tablet views, the widget is automatically added to the pending list.
  1. When the Are you sure you want to enable it? dialog box is prompted, click OK.
Note:
On the Window configuration panel, under Close options, check the Click outside to close Window check box if necessary.
  1. On the toolbar, click the Insert The Insert button button to open the Insert widget panel.
  2. In the Insert widget panel, on the New tab, under Page elements, drag and drop the Button widget onto the canvas.
  3. In the Button widget panel, on the Content tab, click the Set link button to open the Set link pane.
  4. In the Set link pane, for Link to, click the drop-down menu and select Window.
  5. For Select a window, click the drop-down menu below it, and select the window to be anchored to the Button widget.

Note:
An experience can have many windows (anchored to widgets) to display different information for different device modes. Renaming a window when configuring it might be convenient to perform Step 12.
  1. Click OK.
  2. On the builder toolbar, click Save and Live view to save and view the experience in mobile mode.
