Frequently asked question

Can a hosted feature layer be directly exported as a CAD file in ArcGIS Online?

Last Published: April 2, 2024

Answer

No, it is not possible to directly export a hosted feature layer as a computer-aided design (CAD) file in ArcGIS Online.

CAD files are used in a variety of industries, such as architecture, engineering, and manufacturing. These files allow professionals to create, modify, and analyze models and designs efficiently. Exporting a hosted feature layer as a CAD file enables the data to be used with CAD software while retaining spatial information. In ArcGIS Online, the owner or the organization's administrator can export the hosted feature layer in a different format and configure the data export. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Allow data exports for more information. This ability provides greater flexibility when working with and sharing data with others. However, there is currently no option to export a hosted feature layer to a CAD format, which is a known limitation.

In ArcGIS Online, it is possible to export the hosted feature layer as a shapefile or a file geodatabase, both of which are supported by ArcGIS Pro. The data can then be exported as a CAD file in ArcGIS Pro using the Export to CAD geoprocessing tool. This can be done through the following steps.

  1. Log in to ArcGIS Online and export the hosted feature layer to a file geodatabase. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Export data from hosted feature layers for instructions.
  2. On the item details page of the exported file geodatabase, click Download to download the .zip file to the local device. Extract the downloaded .zip file to a local folder.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, add the extracted feature classes from the local folder to the map. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Browse to data to add to a map or scene.
  2. Convert the feature classes to a CAD file using the Export to CAD tool. Refer to FAQ: Is it possible to convert GIS data to CAD data in ArcGIS Pro.
