An abbreviation of sound navigation and ranging. A system or device that measures the time lapse between emitting a sound and receiving a returned echo to determine the location, depth, and shape of objects under water. Certain types of sonar consist only of a listening device that picks up sound emitted by underwater objects, such as submarines.
