A method of creating new map themes or raster layers by applying algebraic operations and analytical functions to existing themes or raster layers. Map algebra uses a combination of mathematical, logical, or Boolean operators (+, >, AND, tan, and so on), and spatial analysis functions (slope, shortest path, spline, and so on); the operands are spatial data and numbers.
