compass balancing zones

[cartography] Zones that divide the earth based on magnetic dip; invented by the compass industry. In a compass balancing zone, a compass needle "balances" perfectly rather than drags or sticks on the compass card or housing. Standard compasses are balanced for the zone in which they are sold.
