How To: Convert a line feature to a polygon feature at the ArcEditor license level

Users at the ArcEditor license level can follow the steps below to convert lines to polygons.

The content in this article pertains to ArcGIS versions 9.x only. Later versions of ArcGIS may contain different functionality, as well as different names and locations for menus, commands and geoprocessing tools.
  1. Create a new empty polygon shapefile or feature class, making sure to apply the correct coordinate system.
  2. Add the existing line feature and the newly created polygon layer to a map document.
  3. Start an edit session and set the target to the polygon shapefile or feature class.
  4. Right-click the polyline layer in the table of contents and select Selection > Select All.
  5. Add the Topology toolbar.
  6. Click the Construct Features icon on the Topology toolbar.
At later versions of ArcGIS, the 'Construct Features' command has been re-named to 'Construct Polygons'.
If the Construct Features command is not on the Topology toolbar, it may be necessary to customize the toolbar to add it.
  1. In the Construct Features dialog box, select Create new polygons from selected features and click OK.
  2. Save edits and stop editing.
