  1. [remote sensing] Acronym for light detection and ranging. An active, optical remote sensing technique that uses laser light to measure distances and to densely sample the surface of the earth, objects on the earth, and physical infrastructure. It produces highly accurate x, y, z measurements of the surface dimensions of objects. These are stored as point clouds or as classified layers. The primary purpose of lidar is to provide topographic maps and assist infrastructure engineering. Media\lidar.gif
