HOW TO

Delete ArcGIS Enterprise temporary files

Last Published: July 21, 2023

Summary

In ArcGIS Enterprise, most processes create temporary files as staging files before they are completed. In some cases, the temporary files are not automatically removed by ArcGIS Enterprise, resulting in slow performance of geoprocessing tasks, and halting other functions. This article provides the workflow to delete the Enterprise temporary files to avoid performance issues.

Procedure

  1. On the ArcGIS Enterprise machine, stop the Enterprise component services.
    1. Type Services in the taskbar’s search box, and press Enter.
    2. Click the Services option from the results to open the console.
    3. Right-click the service and select the Stop option from the drop-down list. The recommended order to stop the ArcGIS Enterprise components is:
      1. Portal for ArcGIS
      2. ArcGIS Server
      3. ArcGIS Data Store
  2. Navigate to the following temporary file directories according to the ArcGIS Enterprise components:
  • ArcGIS Data Store
<ArcGIS_Data_Store_directory>\temp
  • ArcGIS Server
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp
Note:
By default, the AppData folder is hidden. Refer to Microsoft Windows: View hidden files and folders in Windows for instructions to display hidden folders.
  • Portal for ArcGIS
<Portal_content_directory>\temp
  1. Delete the temporary files in the directory.
  2. Start the Enterprise component services.
    1. Type Services in the taskbar’s search box, and press Enter.
    2. Click the Services option from the results to open the console.
    3. Right-click the service and select the Start option from the drop-down list. The recommended order to start the ArcGIS Enterprise components is:
      1. ArcGIS Data Store
      2. ArcGIS Server
      3. Portal for ArcGIS
Note:
After starting Portal for ArcGIS, allow up to 5 minutes for the services within Portal for ArcGIS to start. Esri recommends proceeding after the specified duration.
