PROBLEM

Unable to snap features even though the snapping option is enabled in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: May 6, 2022

Description

Snapping allows users to create features that connect to each other so the edits made are more accurate, with fewer errors. In some instances, attempts to snap features fail even though the snapping option is enabled in ArcGIS Pro.

Cause

  • The coordinate system for the data or map frame and the used data is different.
  • The map contains corrupted or disconnected layers.
  • The snapping tolerance is set to 0.
  • The snapping agents are enabled but the snapping is not.

Solution or Workaround

Use one of the methods below to resolve the issue.

Change the coordinate system

In ArcGIS Pro, ensure the coordinate system is the same as the layer used on the map. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Set the map or scene's coordinate system from a layer for steps to do so.

Note:
Alternatively, change the data frame’s coordinate system in ArcMap before re-importing the data to ArcGIS Pro. Refer to ArcMap: Changing the data frame's coordinate system for instructions.

Remove the corrupted or disconnected layers

In ArcGIS Pro, remove the corrupted layers from the map. If the disconnected data are required, repair the broken data sources for the layers. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Repair broken data sources for layers and tables for more information.

Change the snapping tolerance

In ArcGIS Pro, set the snapping tolerance to the desired value instead of 0 to use the snapping tool. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Change snapping settings to change the snapping tolerance.

Enable the snapping option

Although the snapping agents are enabled, it does not automatically enable the snapping option. On the Edit tab of ArcGIS Pro, in the Snapping group, click the Snapping The image of the Snapping button in ArcGIS Pro. button to turn on the snapping option. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Turn snapping on or off for more information.

Create a new blank project

In ArcGIS Pro, create a new blank project and add the desired data for editing.
