Set ArcGIS Desktop to run with a different graphics card
Summary
Note: This is a partial solution to a situation that allows running ArcGIS Desktop with a functioning graphics card, while fixing an affected card that may be causing the software to crash. Is important to understand that troubleshooting graphic cards is beyond Esri's Scope of Support, and it is advisable to follow the workaround described in the Esri Knowledge Base article: Problem: Graphics card conflict may cause ArcMap to crash.This workaround can be performed for ArcGIS Desktop applications when crashes occur because of conflicts with a graphics card. In this scenario, the computer has more than one graphics card. This can be determined by opening the Windows Device Manager > Display Adapters on the computer.
Procedure
- Open the Windows Settings and select System.
- On the navigation menu, select the Display tab.
- On the right, scroll down and click Graphics Settings.
- In the drop-down menu, select the Desktop App option.
- Click Browse and add the executable file for ArcMap located in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.8\bin\ArcMap.exe
- Once added, click Options and select one of the other graphics cards available.
