PROBLEM

Unique values symbology automatically applied when feature classes are added to a map in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: July 15, 2025

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, when adding a feature class with subtypes to a map, it is automatically symbolized using unique values symbology based on the subtype fields.

The image below shows the feature layer symbolized using unique values by default.

Cause

Unique values symbology is automatically applied when adding the feature class with subtypes to the map in ArcGIS Pro because subtypes are treated as distinct groups within a feature class. This is to help users visualize different categories without a manual setup.

Solution or Workaround

To work around the issue, delete the subtype from the layer being added to the map using one of the options below.

Note: Copy the data using Copy Features or Copy tools before proceeding with the workflow. For more information, refer to ArcGIS Pro: Copy feature datasets, feature classes, and tables to a geodatabase. Subtypes can be used to assign different rules or settings, such as domains, to different categories of data. Deleting all the subtypes will also remove the rules and settings, which can break certain functionalities or workflows that rely on them.
