HOW TO

Publish a feature layer with subtypes and domains to use in ArcGIS Online and Collector

Last Published: September 12, 2023

Summary

After establishing subtypes and their domains, feature classes require that unique value renderers be established before publishing to ArcGIS Online. Unique value renderers essentially mean unique symbology; editing the primary symbology so that each subtype has unique symbology, enables the subtypes and domains functionality in ArcGIS Online.

The unique value renderer sets the TypeID field in the feature service layer's definition and ensures that domains and subtypes work correctly.

Procedure

  1. Create subtypes and domains; example shown in Esri UK link in the Related Information section below.
  2. Right-click the feature class in the Table of Contents > Symbology.
  3. In the Symbology pane, open the Primary symbology drop-down menu.
  1. Click Unique values and edit each subtype symbology as needed.
  2. In the Ribbon, click Share > Web Layer to publish to ArcGIS Online; the published subtypes appear in ArcGIS Online and Collector for ArcGIS.
