PROBLEM

Unable to import an SSL certificate into ArcGIS Data Store

Last Published: November 23, 2021

Description

In some instances, when attempting to use the command prompt to import a self-signed Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate into ArcGIS Data Store, a Usage error is returned in the prompt as below:

Error:
<certificatename> is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

The following error is also returned in the ArcGIS Portal Administrator Directory when attempting to import the same certificate into Portal for ArcGIS:

Error:
Unable to import certificate. Code: 500

Cause

This issue happens when non-alphanumeric characters and non-English characters are used in the SSL certificate password, causing the importation of the certificate to fail.

Note:
Alphanumeric characters consist of letters and numbers only.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve the issue, create an SSL certificate with alphanumeric passwords, and avoid characters specific to non-English locales. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: Replace ArcGIS Data Store SSL certificate for steps to update the ArcGIS Data Store SSL certificate.
